BPM

Off lately we have been incessantly been hearing of BPM. What exactly is this? How has it managed to revolutionize the work culture? Let’s first understand the terminology of this word in simple words. Business process management (BPM) is a business-driven initiative. It is a field of knowledge at the intersection between Management and Information technology, encompassing methods, techniques and tools to design, enact, control, and analyze operational business processes involving humans, organizations, applications, documents and other sources of information. Business process management is a systematic approach to improving an organization's business processes. BPM activities seek to make business processes more effective, more efficient, and more capable of adapting to an ever-changing environment. BPM is a subset of infrastructure management, the administrative area of concern dealing with maintenance and optimization of an organization's equipment and core operations.

A business process is a set of coordinated tasks and activities, conducted by both people and equipment, which will lead to accomplishing a specific organizational goal. The Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI, a non-profit organization, exists to promote the standardization of common business processes, as a means of furthering e-business and business-to-business (B2B) development.

Process management is comprised of end-to-end documentation, improvement (from radical to continuous), and management of organizational processes. Decisions are data-driven and based on customer satisfaction metrics, quality, timeliness, and cost. The responsibility of monitoring process performance and facilitating process changes belongs to a process advisor or manager.

The concept behind BPM is to help organizations automate and optimize their business processes and performance. BPM products provide process modeling tools and key performance indicators to monitor and measure against operational targets. BPM encompasses both system and human workflows and BPM as a product market has been around since the 1990s.

BPM in general is the idea that we can model a business in terms of its processes and then represent them in a way that computers can understand and process.

Ultimately, BPM is about empowering business users to make changes based on business requirements.
